The jewel of Costa Gaia: San Vito Lo Capo

San Vito Lo Capo: a place where sea, sun, culture and traditions blend together stunning the senses of those who come to this corner of paradise. Our hotels have been built in this context to let you spend a pleasant holiday amidst the gentle scent of jasmine and intense aroma of fish fresh off the hook, fruit of the work of fishermen who bring these precious gifts of nature to our tables.

The road leading to San Vito Lo Capo offers lovely scenery of hills covered with olive groves alternating with marble quarries; driving along it you see a viewpoint which overlooks an enchanting landscape: Monte Cofano and the beach of Makari. Further off in the distance lie the sixteenth century tower and age-old chapel of Santa Crescenzia.

From here you drive down towards the town of San Vito Lo Capo which sits six meters above sea level and has 3900 inhabitants. Originally a farming and fishing village, today San Vito Lo Capo is a famous beach resort, sitting on a small bay of golden sand, between Capo San Vito and Punta di Soltanto, at the foot of Monte Monaco.

The site, home to a tuna fishing industry (tonnara) which shut down in the 1600’s, was popular with pilgrims devoted to the Saint: they say that Vito fled from his native city along with the wet nurse Crescenzia and tutor Modesto at the time of the persecution, due to his religion. Following his sanctification, a chapel was dedicated to him with lodging which in 1545 became a Sanctuary. Around the end of the eighteenth century the town developed around it and recently the town grew to its current size thanks to an increase in tourism

In San Vito Lo Capo the flora and fauna are reflected in a clear sea, full of colours, one minute intense the next gentle. Most visitors come to San Vito primarily for its sea with its intense, almost tropical hues, its beach of almost three kilometres of tine golden sand, and its gentle sunny Mediterranean climate. When you arrive at the entrance to the town on the only access road, Via Savoia, you catch a glimpse of the sea even before the town itself. The sea floor slopes gently out to sea and currents do not reach this area so it is particularly suited for children. The coastal road, a few meters inland from the sand, is also the road that leads to the age-old lighthouse, the main road and Piazza Santuario are closed to traffic in the summer, to make room for strolling. The Museo del Mare is worth a visit which is home to an Arab-Norman wreck found in the area in front of the town’s lighthouse. Nature-lovers just need to go a short distance to surround themselves with the uncontaminated Riserva Naturale dello Zingaro, its turquoise clear sea and fantastic beaches create a charming landscape, all yours to discover. For those who like hiking, the trails that lead to Monte Monaco are interesting. Here you can discover the rare examples of native flora and enjoy a beautiful view over the gulfs of Cofano, San Vito Lo Capo, Castellammare del Golfo and beyond.
